Canada Tey is an institution in Hakuba, and you will find it packed and full of atmosphere most nights in Winter. The owner “the boss” will treat you to an amazing Japanese feast that will entertain and enthrall. This restaurant is ranked 7th best overall in the Hakuba area on Trip Adviser.

Pizza Kaya

Pizza Car is a beautiful small restaurant that is very popular with the locals and with international visitors a like. The menu consists of Japanese style Pizza, curry and more traditional local dishes. Bookings are essential in winter as most nights its booked out.

Tracks Bar

Tracks bar is a favourite for Apres action in Goryu, this relaxed bar with pool tables, comfort food and wood burner stoves is a great place to stop by for a drink. Tracks bar regularly have some great live events including Taiko drumming and some international acts.

Matsumoto Castle

Matsumoto Castle is one of four castles designated as ‘National Treasures of Japan’ and the oldest castle donjon remaining in Japan. Construction began in 1592 of the elegant black and white structure with its three turrets. Because of the elegant black walls, Matsumoto Castle is sometimes called ‘Crow Castle’. Inside the castle are steep stairs and low ceilings leading past displays of armor and weapons from the Sengoku period (“Warring-States”) when the castle was built. The narrow wooden windows, once used by archers and gunmen, provide amazing views of the Japanese Alps.Only a short train or car drive from hakuba.

Snow Monkeys

The world famous Jigokudani wild monkey hot-springs is home to about 200 wild monkeys who spend their days soaking in the natural hotsprings, keeping warm from the harsh winter. The park was opened in 1964 and is considered to be the only places in the world to see snow monkeys bathing in the wild.

Hot Springs-Onsens

There are many types of hot springs and different regions of Japan are famous for the certain minerals found in the water. Japanese believe the different minerals provide certain health benefits. Some Japanese will travel great distances just to bath in these special waters. Hakuba has over 10 different hot springs scattered throughout the valley.

Zenkoji Temple

Nagano’s Zenkoji Temple is one of the most important and popular temples in Japan. It was founded in the 7th century and stores the first Buddhist statue ever to be brought into Japan when Buddhism was first introduced in the 6th century. Many major Japanese cities have evolved either from castle towns, harbor towns or temple towns. In the case of Nagano, it grew from a temple town which developed around its temple of great importance, Zenkoji.
